ENDERBY ISLAND

During the months of calling this place home, I always made an effort to remind myself of the privilege of standing on those shores, surrounded by creatures that don’t have the fear response to humans engrained in them…

From tomtits that nest in your bunkroom, to elephant seals farting in the night, to hoiho completing their daily commutes out to see and albatross soaring so close over your head you can hear the fluttering of their feathers in the wind; every moment of every day down there inspired me to be better and do more, for them.

Nothing was more special than sitting back and observing the ebbs and flows of the wild over time without human disturbance. The transitions of megaherb flowers to seeds. Sun filled days to torrential rain. The change in tides and ever raging swell conditions. Newborn pups initially vulnerable but over time developing more and more of the behaviours characteristic of adults. I feel like I got to know that island intimately. It is a secret that I cherish.
