THE SNARES
I’ve always overlooked the Snares Island group, I guess due to its close proximity to the mainland…
The seas have always been too rough going past to stop properly, but on this trip, the stars aligned. The results left me utterly speechless. Hundreds upon hundreds of Snares crested penguins launching off a steep rocky cliff and surrounding us in the water, porpoising and giving us a glimpse of what penguins would look like if they really could fly.
A leopard seal smirking at us as we drifted by, belly clearly full. Sub-Antarctic tree daisies casting shade and relief from the sun’s heat. Beautiful sea caves and turquoise water that had me yearning for a dive. A reminder of nature’s resilience when left alone and filled me full of hope. The pictures don’t do it justice.
