SOUTHERN OCEAN
The Southern Ocean: An open road in any direction for those less domesticated…
I’ve read many a story of the shipwrecks that have paid the price in these waters. How some survivors thrived and others simply gave up. I have done enough crossings by now to have experienced it at its absolute best whilst at other times genuinely fearing for my life with a chorus of vomiting throughout everyone’s cabins. Whatever you do, stay clear of the beds at the bow! There is something comforting about being rocked to sleep by Tangaroa and slowly but surely your body learns to move with the waves.
I like to spend my days out on deck with sea salt drenched hair and tears streaming down my face with the wind surrounded by albatross. Nothing is more beautiful than when the light catches the underside of their wings as they expertly dip and soar amongst turbulent swell. A perfect place for meditation, to pause and breathe and process the feelings that comes with being surrounded by a 360 degree horizon line. A place that reminds you that we are small players in this big game.
